New employees start as non-contributors. They have low business knowledge and even though they might
know the technology used in the organization, they do not know the existing systems or how it is specifically used.
As the employee masters the existing systems and technology, they move into the role of geek. These
are the people with high technical skills, but low business
understanding. Unfortunately, many IT people stay at this point on the
IT value path,
which is where they are vulnerable to outsourcing.
